Salmon Arm 3 Vernon 3

For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

I was at tonight's Vipers-Silverbacks game as the game ended in a 3-3 tie in front of 2,008 fans at Kal Tire Place.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon: Jarrod Schamerhorn
Salmon Arm: Angus Redmond

1st Period: The Vipers needed just ten seconds to come very close to opening the scoring, after Thomas Aldworth's shot from the circle handcuffed Silverbacks starting goaltender Angus Redmund who just got a peice of Aldworth's shot that just about squeaked through Redmond.  Vernon would get the games first powerplay and it was early, just fourty five seconds into the game.  Jagger Williamson setup Anthony Latina at 1:17 giving the Vipers an early 1-0 lead.  Williamson & Johnny Coughlin picked up the helpers.  The Silverbacks stormed right back and on the following shift Phil Midelton's slap-pass setup Taro Hirose at the side of the crease was robbed by Jarrod Schamerhorn who come across the blue paint to make a huge pad save keeping this a one goal game.  The Backs kept pressing would tie the game shortly afterwards on a quick low shot from former Vernon Vipers forward Logan Mick who beat Schamerhorn fivehole at 3:23 Taylor Maruya with the assist.  The Vipers come back just a few shifts later and come very close to re-taking the lead after Brendan Wagner tried to bank the loose puck off Angus Redmond from behind the net, Redmond had to be alert and also try and not knock the puck into his own net made a very difficult save keeping this game tied.  Carson Bolduc looked to get high sticked on a call that was missed, went to the Salmon Arm dressing room for repairs returned to the game.  Salmon Arm slowly started to come on got some great opportunities.  Taylor Maruya beat Jarrod Schamerhorn with a wicked high shot that went off the crossbar.  Shane Danyluk was stopped in close by the Vernon goaltender as the Silverbacks were pressing.  Just before the halfway mark Taro Hirose got inbehind the Viper defence went in on a parcial breakaway but couldnt hold onto the puck, couldnt get a shot away on a close call.  Luke Shiplo come close to giving Vernon the lead, after walking in from the point Shiplo's shot look to beat Redmond but I think it went off the post.  The Vipers kept with the play before Thomas Aldworth gave the Vipers a 2-1 lead seconds later at 11:48 Aldworth's goal was unassisted.  With about six minutes remaining Taro Hirose couldnt beat Schamerhorn in close as both teams were fairly even through out the opening frame.  Shane Danyluk with a good look at the net in the final minute couldnt beat Schamerhorn in close before Anthony Latina was stopped by Angus Redmond who made a big blocker save at the buzzer.  Vernon was up 2-1 after 20 minutes of play.  The Vipers with a good-quick start, come close to opening the scoring in the first ten seconds before opening the scoring just over a minute into the game on the man advantage.  Both teams with some good scoring chances early.  The Backs with some good pressure had atleast three or four good quality chances couldnt capitalize in a period where both teams were fairly even.  The Silverbacks outshot the Vipers 15-13.

2nd Period:  The Vipers would get their second shot with the man advantage just twelve seconds into the middle period.  The Backs with a solid penalty kill would kill off the minor.  A minute or two later Logan Mick come down the left wing snapped a quick shot from the circle handcuffed Vipers starting goaltender Jarrod Schamerhorn who just got a peice of the shot with his trapper as the puck just rolled wide of the far corner on a close call.  Both teams couldnt get much of anything going as both teams looked very scrambled.  The Backs would eventually tie the game.  Working the puck around Damian Chrcek spotted Karl El-Mir in the slot who beat Schamerhorn tied the game 2-2 at 7:28 Chrcek with the lone assist.  Less then two minutes later the Silverbacks would get their first PP of the night.  Jarrod Schamerhorn just about got caught out of position after clearing the puck behind his goal was very lucky to get back into his net just in the nick of time after a Salmon Arm player cut off Schamerhorn's shot around the boards fired a quick shot from the side wall forced the Vipers goaltener to make a quick save or this puck was going into the open cage.  Before the penalty expired Brandon Egli would get called four minutes for high sticking giving Salmon Arm a shortened two man advantage.  The Backs capitalized after Andrew Farny was stopped before Carson Bolduc put SA ahead by a goal at 11:02 Farny and Karl El-Mir with the helpers.  Salmon Arm still on the powerplay couldnt generate any chances as a very strong penalty kill by Vernon would only allow one shot killed off the remainder of the double minor high sticking penalty.  From here on in it was all Silverbacks as Vernon couldnt get much of anything going.  Cole McCaskill's point shot beat Jarrod Schamerhorn but went off the post.  Schamerhorn then made a big save off Karl El-Mir in close.  Late in the period a scrum formed close to the Backs goal as several players were pushing and shoving, exchanged words before the melay was broken up.  Salmon Arm held a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes of play.  Both teams couldnt get much of anything going early as the play was very scrambled at both ends of the rink before the Vipers got into penalty trouble and Salmon Arm took the lead.  The Backs carried most of the play for most of the period outplayed Vernon.  The Vipers generated no offence at all this period did have a good penalty kill.  Yes they gave up the one goal but I thought the remainder of the double minor was very well killed off.  The Silverbacks outshot the Vipers 14-5.

3rd Period: In the opening minute Linden Hora looking for his first career BCHL goal was stoned by Angus Redmond who come out to the top of the blue paint was going down made a huge save off the Vipers rookie keeping this a one goal game.  The Vipers would get an early powerplay in the opening minute tied the game at three.  Luke Shiplo's point shot was stopped by Redmond before Liam Coughlin was Johnny on the spot at the side of the net put the puck home on a second rebound tied the game at 1:59 Shiplo and Anthony Latina picked up the helpers.  This goal gave the Vipers life as Vernon was buzzing early had lots of jump attacked the Silverbacks with some good pressure.  The Vipers with several scoring chances couldnt find the game tying goal.  Anthony Latina come very close to tying the game early just missed the far corner.  Shane Danyluk got inbehind the Viper defence but couldnt get a shot off on a close call.  Vernon carried the edge in play for most of the first half would get a great opportunity at the halfway mark.  The Silverbacks caught Liam Coughlin with a highstick gave Vernon a four minute PP as Coughlin went to the Vipers dressing room to get looked at but would return.  Vernon struggled getting just a single shot as SA with a very good penalty kill kept the Vipers powerplay unit to the outside would kill off the double minor getting a huge boost from the penalty kill.  The Backs with very little chances most of the period had two great opportunities late in the period.  Ross Heidt with a great look at the net couldnt beat Jarrod Schamerhorn who come up with a big glove save in the final minutes.  Schamerhorn then robbed Cole McCaskill with a second glove save keeping this game tied.  The final six or so minutes seemed to really drag on with several stopages in play.  Not alot of flow late in the period as the play come to a real crawl.  It was tied 3-3 after 60 minutes of play.  The Vipers with a huge powerplay goal early to start the period carried the better of the play, atleast in the first ten minutes missed a great opportunity to take the lead struggled with a double minor PP.  SA with a strong penalty kill on the double minor had troubles getting any real kind of offence going.  Vernon outshot Salmon Arm 12-6.

Overtime: The Silverbacks carried the play for most of the first OT but it was Johnny Coughlin with the best chance in the extra frame put on a nice dangle in close couldnt hold onto the puck at the end had the Vipers best opportunity.  SA may have carried the edge in play but didnt really get a good look at the net.  Vernon come on strong late in the final minute or so but just like Salmon Arm didnt really generate any real good chances.  It was still tied 3-3 after 65 minutes of play.  The Vipers outshot the Backs 4-2.

Double Overtime: Three on three and the play really opened up as both teams generated some of the best chances of the night.  Mitch Meek with a strong forecheck along the wall setup Anthony Latina with a great chance to end it for Vernon looked to have half of the arena jump up as well sounded off the goal horn just missed a great opportunity in close just missing the far corner.  Thomas Aldworth setup TJ Dumonceaux on a two on one but it was Andrew Farny who come up with a huge defensive play to break up the Viper odd man rush.  The Backs caught the Viper defence napping sent Josh Blanchard in for the breakaway was stopped by Jarrod Schamerhorn who closed the fivehole made a big save keeping this game tied.  Schamerhorn then stoned Taro Hirose and made a huge save off Chase Priskie who jumped up into the play in the final minute.  Both clubs with great chances at both ends of the rink ended in a 3-3 tie.  Salmon Arm outshot Vernon 4-2.

Top Players: (Vernon)

Anthony Latina (1 goal & 1 assist) Had a strong game up front for Vernon.  Latina was really skating, working hard carried the puck lots, had some real good chances tonight was always in and around the SA net.

Linden Hora I thought had a strong game for the Vipers.  Hora played very well played with alot of confidence was buzzing, had a great opportunity for his first goal of the season couldnt beat Angus Redmond in close in the opening minute of the 3rd.

Thomas Aldworth (1 goal) I thought played fairly well, was hard to knock off the puck, tried creating and generating chances worked hard all night.

Jarrod Schamerhorn (38 saves) Has been solid in this home and home series with Salmon Arm.  Schamerhorn looked very solid this weekend made some huge saves tonight, especially in overtime.  Really plays his position well, dosnt give up alot of rebounds is hard to beat in close.  For the second straight night, gave his team a chance to win.  You have to wonder whats going to happen with Danny Todosychuk when he returns to the lineup?  I think Schamerhorn has taken over and fully deserved the #1 job.  Will the Vipers keep a twenty year old goaltender as the backup? & will Todosychuk want to spend his final year of Junior hockey on the bench?

Game Thought's: (Vernon)

The Vipers unveiled their special "Salute To The Troops" jerseys tonight, fans will be able to bid by silent auction on these jerseys for the month of November starting tonight.  The funds raised will go to the Veterans Transition Program treating serving and ex serving veterans with PTSD.  After a very dissapointing 2-1 loss in Salmon Arm last night, in a game where I thought Vernon played their worst game of the season come back tonight with a much better effort and performance.  The Vipers didnt play a full seventy minutes but played much better after last night's loss.  I liked how the Vipers found ways to get through the Silverbacks defence that was so hard to beat last night.  I thought Vernon generated more chances and found ways at getting pucks to the net and create opportunities.  I thought Vernon looked good in the opening period, opened the scoring early, had some chances were up by one.  The 2nd period was a different story, the Vipers with just five shots on goal couldnt get much of anything going, had troubles generating chances got into penalty trouble and it cost them.  The Silverbacks outplayed the Vipers in the middle frame were by far the better of the two teams.  Vernon with a much better 3rd period, tied the game early with the man advantage I thought carried most of the play in the third had the better of the chances.  The Vipers missed a great opportunity not capitalizing on the double minor penalty.  Getting just one shot the Vipers struggled.  In overtime Vernon with some great chances couldnt finish or beat Angus Redmond.  This was a very exciting-entertaining hockey game in a game where the Vipers needed-wanted a win.  The Vipers cant give up 41 shots on a team like Salmon Arm.  I dont think the Vipers coaching staff will be happy with the home & home series.  Kevin Kraus said it best on the post game show, the Vipers were inconsistant through out the game.  Heading into the two games with Salmon Arm, the Silverbacks had lost four straight and were struggling.  The Vipers had won seven of their last nine and playing well.  These were two games the Vipers needed-wanted to win, you have to beat teams below you in the standings if you want to move up the standings and gain some ground on the teams above you.  With the point Vernon moves into 3rd place.  Vernon now travels to Trail for an afternoon game tomorrow wich will be very tough as the Vipers will be playing their fourth game in five days.

Top Players: (Salmon Arm)

Andrew Farny (1 assist) Leads the Backs in scoring played another solid game on the blueline for Salmon Arm.  I thought Farny looked and played very well in the two games vs Vernon.  Made a huge defensive play on TJ Dumonceaux in double ot to break up a Viper two on one.

Chase Priskie also looked good for a second straight night.  Had a great chance to end the game with the puck on his stick was stoned by Jarrod Schamerhorn in the final minute of double overtime.

Karl El-Mir (1 goal & 1 assist) I thought was Salmon Arm's best player this evening.  Played with a ton of energy, was really skating, was all over the ice and at both ends of the rink.  El-Mir had several good opportunities was dangerous with and without the puck, very quick on his feet was very strong.

Logan Mick (1 goal) I thought played very well vs his former team.  I didnt really notice Mick last night but tonight I thought played with alot of energy, was skating hard, was going to the net.

Taro Hirose also looked good for the second straight game, the Backs forward had several good chances tonight was buzzing.  Was dangerous at times really sees and reads the ice.

Shane Danyluk had some good chances tonight, played well.

Ross Heidt I thought was a real spark plug for the Silverbacks, played with lots of jump-energy had a few quality chances was another kid who was really buzzing.

Taylor Maruya (1 assist) Seems to always play well against the Vipers, looked very good last night in the 2-1 victory I dont think stood out as much tonight, but still played well.  Had a good look at the net in the 1st period but hit the crossbar.

Angus Redmond (33 saves) I didnt think was tested alot in last night's game, saw alot more action tonight come up with some good saves.  In the 3rd and in overtime made some big saves, didnt allow alot of rebounds played well, gave his team a chance to win.

Game Thought's: (Salmon Arm)

After losing four straight the Backs took both three out of a possible four points in the home and home series with the Vipers are now unbeatten in back to back games moved three points up on ast place Trail and are only a single point back of Merrit & Vernon.  These two teams will meet again in Salmon Arm on the 28th.  I thought SA played a much more tighter-defensive game Friday but looked good tonight.  I think both teams will agree they both can be better, both teams didnt play a full sixty minutes but overall both teams were pretty even at times while at other times through out the game, one team looked better then the other team.  I thought Salmon Arm created and generated alot more scoring chances tonight, compared to last night.  The Silverbacks with 41 shots couldnt get the game winner on the solid goaltending of Jarrod Schamerhorn.
