More parking at multiplex

Darren Handschuh - Mar 9, 2017

Access to Kal Tire Place is going to get easier for people with mobility issues.

Construction has started at the arena complex, adjacent to 43rd Avenue, to create 29 regular parking stalls and 13 handicapped stalls.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of April, weather depending, prior to excavation work beginning in the north parking lot. The new parking area is part of the overall expansion project that will see a new arena built beside the existing Kal Tire Place.

The existing 13 handicapped parking stalls on the east side of the access road will be relocated closer to the building to improve accessibility to the front entrance.

The location where the 13 handicapped stalls are presently marked will be repainted as 19 regular parking stalls, leading to a total of 48 new stalls.

A group hoping to darken the skies around Vernon has suggested shielding on lights that are to be re-used in the parking lot.

“Dark skies are beautiful, comforting, healthy,” John Kerr, a local member of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, told a recent meeting of local politicians. “One-third of the world's population can no longer see the Milky Way.”

"This is an issue," director Doug Dirk said at the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee meeting on Thursday. "With industry as well. There is excess light."
