Duncan, BC  – The Cowichan Valley Capitals junior A hockey club is pleased to officially introduce forward Ethan Scardina to the club for next season.

Scardina comes to Cowichan from the Delta Hockey Academy in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League. The White Rock, BC native played with Delta’s Bantam Prep team three seasons ago, before jumping to the Elite 15’s two years ago and, last season, to the Midget Prep club. In 2016-17, the 16-year-old Scardina totaled nine goals and 21 points in 28 games, as well as 24 penalty minutes.
He also made his BCHL debut with the Vernon Vipers, getting in to one game as an affiliate.

“We are pleased to add Ethan to our team and look forward to contributing to his development,” said Capitals head coach and general manager Bob Beatty.

Scardina becomes the second current Capitals player recruited from the Delta Hockey Academy Midget Prep team in the past two seasons, joining a good friend of his in Nick Wilson. The club won the CSSHL championship in the Midget Prep division with Wilson on the roster in 2015-16, and this past season Scardina’s team finished third overall in the 15-team league, before falling short of the semi-final in the CSSHL playoffs.

“Delta has a great program. Their teams are well coached and play with a lot of discipline and pace,” Beatty added.

Scardina fills one 16-year-old player spot on the Capitals roster; on the 23-man roster, each BCHL team is required to carry at least two players who are 17-years old or younger (born in 2000 or 2001, for the coming season).

EHC Olten wont be renewing the contract of former Vernon Vipers defenceman Curtis Gedig. Gedig played 38 games in his first and only season with EHC Olten collected (11-goals-26-assists-37-points).

After four years at Ohio State University (2010-2014) Gedig signed an amateur tryout agreement with the American Hockey League (AHL) Albany Devils on April 4th 2014. Gedig never played a game with the Devils would sign his first professional contract with the American Hockey League (AHL) Adirondack Flames in October 2014. Gedig attended the Calgary Flames 2014 Training camp before being released-assigned to the Adirondack Flames. Various departures with the EHCO

March 16 2017

The EHC Olten separates from long-standing players and will deny the next season with two foreign forwards.

After a season failed at many levels there are several conversations which take place with the EHC Olten during these days – under it also painful ones. Thus the club has decided to extend the running out contracts with the long-standing defenders Romano Pargätzi, Simon Schnyder and Remo Meister no more. Master comes from the Oltner junior department and played since 2005 in the 1-st team, tailors and Pargätzi bumped in 2007 respectively in 2008 to the EHC Olten. Together three on 1455 NLB plays with the EHCO bring it. The club thanks the players warmly for her unusual club loyalty as well as her big application and wishes them for the future only the best.

Black brook new beginning

In addition, Stümer Diego Schwarzenbach (picture) will leave the club. His contract which runs till the end season 2017/18 is dissolved in the mutual agreement. It was the wish of the player for aerial change which gave the impulse to good and constructive conversations. The Thaler black brook did itself in the past season to call away his eleventh in series with the EHCO, hard, his usual achievement and came in the end that a change would be an advantage for both sides: „ I cannot help in this constitution my heart association and, therefore, need a new beginning at another place – around afterwards, hopefully, regained strength to the club to be able to return. “ The EHC Olten supports Diego Schwarzenbach in this plan and wishes him for the coming challenge all the best.

From now on without Gedig

Desweiteren the collaboration is also finished with Curtis Gedig whose contract would be valid for an other season. It is searched for a solution good for both sides. Last the Canadian defender was hardly used after good seasonal start and plays in the plans of EHCO-Headcoach Bengt-Å ke Gustafsson no more role; the Swede plans for the new season with two foreign forwards.

In the end, both young forwards Paolo Morini and Ramón Diem also receive no new contract. Also to them count the thanks of the club and the best wishes to the future.

Former Vernon Laker Poeschek Faces Criminal Charges:

Former Vernon Lakers forward Rudy Poeschek faces criminal charges-has a warrant out for his arrest.

Poeschek played one season in Vernon with the 1982-83 Vernon Lakers collecting (4-goals-10-assists-14-points) before leaving for the Western Hockey League.

Poeschek was drafted 238th overall by the New York Rangers in Round 12 of the 1985 NHL Entry Draft. Poeschek played eleven seasons in the National Hockey League with four different teams (New York Rangers, Winnipeg, Tampa Bay & St. Louis).

Former NHLer Rudy Poeschek faces charge

By Tim Petruk - June 15, 2017

A former National Hockey League enforcer who is wanted on a warrant after missing a court date earlier this month is facing a new charge.

Rudy Poeschek has been on the lam since no-showing in Kamloops provincial court on June 2 for what would have been his trial on an allegation he breached his probation. A warrant for his arrest was issued and he has since been charged with one count of failing to appear in court.

The 50-year-old has previously told KTW his memory is failing him. He said he simply forgot to go to a meeting with his probation officer last summer and said he almost missed a court date in November for the same reason.

Poeschek is one of a number of former NHL players suing the league, alleging officials knew of the dangers posed by repeated head injuries and concussions.

In a series published in KTW in 2015, a Boston-based neurosurgeon suggested Poeschek may be suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a chronic brain disease found to have affected many former hockey and football players.

Robert Cantu described the symptoms of CTE as being similar to those of Alzheimer’s, and said the condition is caused by “rattling your brain around in your head — a lot.”

In the 2015 KTW series, Poeschek said he is considering donating his brain to science after his death — something that is being done by an increasing number of dying former professional athletes.

Poeschek was an enforcer in the NHL over parts of 12 seasons. He was selected by the New York Rangers in the 12th round of the 1985 NHL Entry Draft while playing junior hockey in his hometown of Kamloops.

After a playing career that ended in 2001, Poeschek was arrested eight times while living in Tampa, Fla., culminating in a March 13, 2005, demolition derby that landed him behind bars. He moved with his family to Kamloops after his release from a Florida jail.

Poeschek was on probation last summer as part of a sentence he received after pleading guilty to a string of criminal charges — one count of assault and three of driving while prohibited — in 2015.

He was jailed for 45 days and placed on an 18-month probation term.

The Prince George Spruce Kings are excited to announce that Dustin Manz has committed to play for the team this upcoming season. Dustin Manz is a 5’11” 205lb 1999 born forward who hails from Vanderbilt, Michigan. Playing for the Aston Rebels of the North American Hockey League (NAHL), the young forward had four goals and 12 assists in 56 games. Then in the playoffs enroute to the league finals, Manz contributed three goals and one assist in 12 games. Dustin is committed to play NCAA division 1 hockey at Lake Superior State University where he will join former Spruce Kings Bryan Basilico and Tyler Anderson. “Dustin Manz is a strong power forward type player who will make an immediate positive impact on our lineup. He is a very good 200 foot player who will be able to play in all situations. He’s also a very focused young man who will provide some great leadership on and off the ice,” said Spruce Kings General Manager Mike Hawes. Dustin will join his new Spruce Kings teammates when the team begins their main training camp on Thursday August 24th at Rolling Mix Concrete Arena The team would like to welcome Dustin and his family to the Spruce Kings family.

Smoke Eaters Sign Peacock:

The Trail Smoke Eaters have signed two goalies in as many days. While the trade for Brandon Wells has taken care of the team’s need for an experienced goalie next season, the team is also excited that they have signed their goalie for the future. The Trail Smoke Eaters are pleased to announce that 17-year-old Brandon Peacock has signed with the team. Peacock, who hails from Quesnel, British Columbia, has played the past four seasons for the Okanagan Hockey Academy. Peacock is ready to make the jump to the next level and the Smoke Eaters feel the duo of Wells and Peacock will give them two solid options next season. Head Coach Cam Keith on committing Peacock: “Brandon is a goalie that we had an eye on for a while. We’re confident that he can come in to the BCHL as a 17-year-old. Brandon had a strong spring camp and we knew right away that he was a player we could help develop into a BCHL starter.” The entire Trail Smoke Eaters organization would like to welcome Brandon to Trail.

Regina Pats Aren’t Holding Their Breath On Former Penticton Vee Jost:

Head coach and general manager John Paddock is content to let things play out with the dynamic 19-year-old centre, who was selected 10th overall in the 2016 NHL draft by the Colorado Avalanche. Although Regina owns Jost’s major-junior rights, he is expected to open next season with the Avalanche. “It’s all in Colorado’s hands,” said Paddock, a former head coach and GM of the Winnipeg Jets. “I don’t have the need or desire to reach out. I know how it works in the NHL. He’s going to be given every chance to make the Colorado Avalanche. If he’s playing there and he’s playing good enough, then they probably won’t let him go. If circumstances are different, then there definitely will be a conversation that ‘I would like you to look at this option.’ ” Jost made his NHL debut this spring, recording one goal in six games after his freshman season ended with the University of North Dakota. Jost signed an entry-level contract with Colorado on March 29, which makes him ineligible to return to North Dakota next season. That seemingly opens the door to Regina if he’s unable to win a spot with the Avalanche. Then again, maybe not. Although there are differing opinions on the subject, Colorado is operating under the assumption that Jost would be eligible to join its AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage. If Jost had been playing for a WHL club when he was drafted, it would be cut and dried: The agreement between the NHL and the Canadian Hockey League prohibits teams from sending major-junior players to the minors until their 20-year-old season. However, a spokesman for the Avalanche told the Regina Leader-Post earlier this year that Jost is indeed eligible to be assigned to the AHL because he was drafted out of the B.C. junior A ranks. Paddock has been led to believe that’s the case. “It’s really tricky because, for some ridiculous reason, there’s a lot of grey around that,” he said. “I tend to believe that he can (go to the AHL). There are people who should know and nobody really seems to know (for certain). I’m thinking that’s an option for the Avalanche but I don’t know for sure.” It becomes a moot point if Jost does as expected and earns a spot with Colorado. That’s the most likely scenario, especially since GM Joe Sakic has committed to rebuilding his roster around young talent like Jost, who’s among the team’s top prospects. “You wish him the best to play in Colorado,” said Paddock. “I hope he plays in Colorado next year and scores 20 goals. If he’s in Colorado and he’s going to get two goals by the end of the year, then there’s a better place for him.” The Pats believe they became a more appealing fall-back option when they were named the host team for the 2018 Memorial Cup. The addition of Jost would give them an unparalleled one-two punch at centre along with fellow NHL first-rounder Sam Steel. However, knowing that Jost is likely ticketed for the NHL, Paddock went ahead last week and traded for Medicine Hat Tigers centre Matt Bradley. The Pats acquired Jost’s WHL rights last summer from the Everett Silvertips, who were unable to recruit the native of St. Albert, Alta., after selecting him seventh overall in the 2013 bantam draft. Paddock spoke to Jost and his mother last summer, at which point he confirmed his commitment to UND. Jost’s future now lies in Colorado and the Pats are content to leave it at that until they hear differently. “It’s not a priority in my mind,” added Paddock, who would send a first-round bantam pick in 2019 to Everett if Jost reported. “We have his rights like we always wanted to have his rights if this situation arose where we have the Memorial Cup. It’s just a wait and see.”

Salmon Arm-Weyburn Trade:

Salmon Arm Silverbacks general manager Troy Mick today announced the team has traded forward Trevor Ayre to the Weyburn Red Wings of the SJHL for future considerations. Trevor was acquired at the Jan 10th deadline along with Ryan Hogg and future considerations for Mitch Skapski & Haydn Hopkins. “With so many players returning we have to find a home for some of our players and Trevor is a great kid and will do great in the SJHL” stated GM Troy Mick. It’s tough to make these deals but we wanted to make sure he gets to start the season with his new team right from main camp. The silverbacks would like to thank Trevor for his time in Salmon Arm and wish him the best of luck with Weyburn.

Giant Video Screen Installed In Cominco Arena:

The Trail Smoke Eaters organization adds even more excitement to game nights. The Trail Smoke Eaters organization is hoping the latest six-figure addition to the rink will add even more excitement to game nights. This week crews are installing a giant video screen on the south wall of the Cominco Arena that is expected to bring fans even closer to the action. A series of LED panels have been installed to create a screen 19-feet wide and 10-feet high. Add to that the installation, the new electronics to operate the board and the video cameras around the rink and the price tag hits close to $200,000. “It is absolutely 100 per cent crucial for our organization to provide a spectacular, inter-active night out for the local communities,” said team owner Rich Murphy. “In this day and age it’s crucial to have this type of inter-active video board, to basically get Millennials into the mix. Without them, it’ll be very difficult to survive. “I can’t stress enough how important it is for us to do our job, not just provide a hockey game, but provide a night out for our fans.” In addition to the giant video screen, four cameras will be providing viewpoints for the fans. Two fixed cameras will be located above the penalty box allowing fans to see a wide-angle shot of the action or a close-up of the play around the puck. Two hand-held cameras will be located at both ends of the rink to give fans a complete look at the game. Steve Robinson, operations manager for the Smokies, said the cameras will allow fans to see action all over the ice on the big screen. He said in some spots of the rink, fans had a hard time seeing the action in certain corners or even at the other end. The video screen, with its high definition picture, will bring that all into a clear focus. “They will have a high-def visual of everything that’s going on,” said Robinson. “We used to have a replay (with the old video scoreboard) with the one angle but now we can show different angles.” He added the new system would allow the rink to produce video replays for officials should the BCHL adopt that policy for its games. Penticton has already experimented with video reviews during a few games last season but so far no word on a league-wide decision. And the screen won’t be limited to the action between the whistles. The goal is to provide a full entertainment package for the paying customer, said Robinson. “There will be pre-game stuff for people who come to the rink early, featuring interviews with players and stuff like that.” The hockey fans won’t be the only ones benefiting from the latest addition to the Cominco Arena. Robinson said the Smokies will work with the City of Trail to make it available for other events like graduation or Silver City Days. But the bottom line is also to help generate some extra revenue to make the venture worthwhile. And that’s where sponsorship deals come in with businesses being promoted on the screen for in-game moments like power plays, said Allison McCarthy, the team’s sales and event manager. “We hope people look at it and see it as a great opportunity to get up there and promote their business,” added Robinson. The video screen is expected to be operational this week but the full capabilities won’t be ready until the work is complete in the media booth above the players’ benches. It’s just one of a series of on-going improvements to the facility since the Murphy family purchased the team last fall. “The Trail Smoke Eaters and the Murphy family have a significant six-figure investment in this video screen and the infrastructure involved with the screen itself,” added Murphy. “As well, with the purchase of the team, renovations to the corporate office, the weight room, the players’ lounge, the new dressing rooms, the new bathrooms and showers, the new coaches’ office and training room, we have a healthy investment north of $1.8 million.” Meanwhile the team’s early bird ticket sales wrapped up on May 31 and McCarthy said 620 season tickets have been sold for the upcoming season as the club approaches its goal of 750 season tickets for the start of the season.

Franlin Commits To Cowichan Capitals:

The Cowichan Valley Capitals junior A hockey club is pleased to announce the commitment of forward Caleb Franklin (99) for the 2017-18 season. Franklin, from Lake Cowichan, has spent the past two seasons with the Kerry Park Islanders in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL). After 13 goals and 25 points as a rookie with the club two years ago, Franklin led the Islanders in goals (20), assists (27) and points (47) in 47 games this past season, and would be named a first-team all-star in the junior B league. The 17-year-old also led the Isles with 11 points in 11 playoff games, as Kerry Park advanced to round two of the VIJHL playoffs for the first time since 2012. Franklin also was an alternate captain for the Islanders. His commitment to the Capitals is a “no brainer”, according to Islanders head coach Aaron Spotts, who helped Franklin follow a development plan in the past two seasons. Spotts is a Capital alumni himself, having played 141 games with the club between 2003-2006. “Frankie is a hard working two-way forward capable of playing center or wing. He has a high compete level and a great team-first attitude,” Capitals head coach and general manager Bob Beatty commented. Franklin got in to five games of BCHL action as an affiliate with the Caps last season and practiced regularly with the club.

Nanaimo-Salmon Arm Trade:

The Nanaimo Clippers have acquired Sam Macbean from the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in exchange for future considerations. The 19-year old defenceman was recently acquired by the Silverbacks from the Grande Prairie Storm of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. The 6’3”, 180-lb., Calgary, Alberta native tallied 6 points in 51 games played last season with the Storm. We would like to welcome Sam to the Clippers Family and look forward to seeing him on the ice with his new teammates at Training Camp in August.

Rodgers Steps Away From Broadcast Booth:

The Penticton Vees Jr. A Hockey Club will have a new voice calling games in September, as longtime broadcaster Fraser Rodgers, is stepping down from his post as Director of Broadcasting & Media Relations. Rodgers spent six years (2011-2017) in Penticton, calling over 474 regular season and playoff games, including four BCHL Fred Page Cup Finals, two Western Canada Cups and Three RBC Cups, including the Vees 2012 national championship in Humboldt, Saskatchewan. “First and foremost, I want to thank the Vees’ ownership group and Fred Harbinson for giving me the opportunity to work for such a prestigious organization for the last six years. I also want to thank the incredibly passionate and loyal fan base for their tremendous support; it was an incredible experience and one I will cherish forever,” said outgoing broadcaster Fraser Rodgers. “Fraser has been a huge part of our fans experience over the past 6 years.  His voice has connected our fans & families from all over North America and he will be greatly missed.  We wish Fraser the best of luck!” said Vees president, head coach & general manager Fred Harbinson. The organization would like to congratulate Fraser on his tenure in Penticton and wish him all the best in his future endeavours. The Vees are expected to announce a replacement in the coming days.

BCHL News & Trades:

I found these press releases off team websites, twitter accounts, blogs or online. All Vipers news-trades are posted on this blog as soon as released-announced.

BCHL News & Trades:

Smoke Eaters Look To Benefit From Nothern Exposure:

The Trail Smoke Eaters were pleased with its new prospects after wrapping up its camp in Whitehorse. Over 100 years ago, thousands of would-be prospectors headed north to the Yukon in search of gold, and the tradition continued earlier this month when Trail Smoke Eaters staff journeyed to Whitehorse, Yukon’s capital, mining for of a different kind of bounty. Smoke Eaters head coach and GM Cam Keith, director of hockey and business operations Craig Clare, and operations manager Steve Robinson made the trip north where they evaluated about 60 players over the three-day spring camp and came away impressed with the talent and richer for the experience. “We 100 per cent want to come back,” Robinson told the Whitehorse Star. “Overall the talent level was higher than we expected.” For the Smoke Eaters, the northern foray was to scout out a largely untapped talent source and identify potential players not only for the BCHL team, but for the Major Midget Kootenay Ice and the KIJHL’s Beaver Valley Nitehawks as well. “We didn’t know what to expect, but we already knew there were some players up there, and that’s one of the reasons why we wanted to go there,” said Clare. “We did a little bit of research and not a lot of teams went there – and when I say not a lot – no one.” The camp consisted of a Pee Wee, Bantam, and Spring Camp age groups with a scout from the Nitehawks also in attendance. The younger groups focused on drills to enhance their skills, but for the older groups it was full-on scrimmage for three straight days. “We had three different groups, and it was competitive,” said Clare. “All in all the talent level was good, we found some new prospects, and we’ll probably be inviting a couple to main camp here.” For players growing up and playing hockey in the Yukon’s isolated communities, a lack of competition and exposure to junior and college scouts pose a very real disadvantage. By running the camp, the Smoke Eaters offered players a rare and exciting opportunity. “A lot of these players, they are just looking for an opportunity, because not a lot of opportunities come to them, they have to work pretty hard for it. I think it worked really well, we got a lot of support from Yukon minor hockey and the Whitehorse players.” Hockey Yukon president Carl Burgess told the Star that the Smoke Eater Camp was a good opportunity for the boys to see how the prospects camp (for birth years 1998 to 2002) works. “It takes the mystique out of it when it’s their turn,” said Burgess. The Smoke Eaters also viewed its first trip north as a learning experience. Changing the date so it doesn’t coincide with the May long weekend, adding a goalie session, and facilitating and increasing players attendance from other northern communities in Alaska and N.W.T. are on the list. “I think it was a little bit of trial and error,” added Clare. “They were feeling us out to see what kind of camp we’d put on, and it went very well, and the response we got back was very positive. I think early in the season we’ll be putting in plans to head back up. “It was good for us to go up there and see. You get locked into the Lower Mainland and Alberta and Saskatchewan, and the Kootenay, which we will always be (locked in), but to see what’s out there is great.”

AGM News & Notes:

The BCHL held its annual general meeting last week in Richmond, B.C. and have decided on several initiatives that will take place for the coming season. First, the league confirmed the results of a motion voted on prior to the AGM that sees the Wenatchee Wild move to the Interior Division for 2017-18 season. The Wild competed in the Mainland Division for the past two seasons. The league has entered into a partnership agreement that will see each of its players undergo base-line concussion tests prior to participating in league games. The initial testing will be completed at the 2017 Bauer BCHL Showcase. When new players join the league, they will be tested prior to competing in their first game. The partnership is part of the BCHL’s ongoing efforts to ensure player safety. The BCHL renewed its commitment to an existing partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association of B.C. (CMHA BC) via its Talk Today Program where each team has a CMHA liaison who provides referrals to mental health and addictions support. Additional resources have been committed to the Ultimate Toolkit program for fan engagement and ticket sales. The initial phase of the program, in place for the 2017 BCHL playoffs, saw an increase in attendance of close to 24 per cent over the 2016 playoffs. Also, BCHL clubs will be pursuing upgrades to their broadcast systems to get high-definition video for pay-per-view customers on HockeyTV. Several BCHL teams had HD in place last season and the goal is to have all arenas with upgraded cameras for 2017-18. The dates for the 2017 Bauer BCHL Showcase are Sept. 20 to 24 at Prospera Centre in Chilliwack. All games this year will take place on the arena’s main sheet of ice. The board of governors is also fully in support and looking forward to the first-ever BCHL Exposure Camp which is happening July 1 to 3 at Richmond Olympic Oval. The camp is at full capacity with 132 elite young hockey players and their families coming to learn from BCHL coaches and find out more about the Junior A – NCAA development path. Finally, the league named two individuals for excellence in the administrative and promotional aspects for the league. Wenatchee Wild governor David White was named Executive of the Year while Chilliwack Chiefs director of marketing Barry Douglas was named Marketer of the Year. The 2017-18 season will be the 56th for the BCHL. Details are still be finalized for the regular season schedule and it should be announced by the end of June.

Grizzlies Name Clark Captain For 2017-18 Season:

The Victoria Grizzlies have wasted little time in announcing their captain for the 2017-18 season, handing the coveted ‘C’ to power forward Lucas Clark. The 20-year-old Port Perry, Ont., native will be entering his second B.C. Hockey League season with the Island Division champions. “Clark is a do-it-all type of forward who is smart defensively, tough and hard to play against, works extremely hard in games and practices — and he is a very good offensive player on top of that. You can’t ask for much more in a forward,” Grizzlies general manager and head coach Craig Didmon said. Didmon expects the six-foot-two, 210-pound centre to play a big role for the team next season. With that comes an expectation to provide solid offensive numbers as well as leadership. Clark recorded 17 goals and 26 assists in 57 regular-season games in 2016-17. He added four goals and four assists in 17 playoff games. He played mostly on an all-rookie line with Calgary product Jamie Rome and local Cam Thompson. The three combined for 50 goals and 121 points. Rome is one of several candidates to become an assistant captain, to be named at a later date. “Clark and Rome together are two big power forwards who bring speed and physicality,” said Didmon. “Thompson is a smart and physical player as well. They all bring a 200-foot game to the table and all three have a knack for putting the puck in the net.” Clark replaces graduated defenceman Cody Van Lierop as captain. P.J. Conlon wore the ‘C’ the year before as the Grizzlies have gone through five captains in five years. The last three have hailed from Ontario. “For me to be captain is a huge honour and at the same time, I know it comes with a ton of responsibility,” Clark said. “I look forward to the challenge of rallying the great group of guys playing on this hockey club and continuing to build on this strong core of a team, where everyone has the same mindset — that goal of winning an RBC Cup,” added Clark, who will play his final year of junior eligibility, hoping to continue on to minor pro.

West Kelowna-Salmon Arm Trade:

Salmon Arm Silverbacks general manager Troy Mick today announced the team has traded forward Matt Kowalski (acquired from Nanaimo Clippers from Future Considerations from the Josh Blanchard deal) for Salmon Arm’s very own Logan Mostat from the West Kelowna Warriors. Mostat from Salmon Arm, BC had 18 goals and 24 assists in 60 games this past season with the Surrey Eagles & the West Kelowna Warriors. The 5’10 ft 180 lbs forward also had 43 Penalty minutes. The smooth skating forward will be looking forward to playing his last year of junior hockey in front of friends and family at the Shaw Centre. “Logan has taken huge strides the past 2 years in his development and we are looking forward to seeing him excel in the Silverbacks jersey” says GM Troy Mick. He plays with passion and an edge that the fans will love and will be a good addition to our offense while he pursues his NCAA dreams. “I am very excited to be apart of the Silverbacks organization and to play in front of friends and family in my hometown this season. I can’t wait to get the year going, it’s going to be a great one.” Stated Mostat.

Former Viper Forward Pierce Says Dismissal From Ice Was “A Shocker”

This was in the Cranbrook Daily Newspaper:

Luke Pierce says dismissal from Ice was “a shocker”

Former Kootenay coach disappointed to not be returning for 2017-18, staying optimistic about future

Brad McLeod Fri Jun 2nd, 2017

Coaching can be a tough business and Luke Pierce knows that well.

His dismissal from the Kootenay Ice on Friday, however, was a brand new experience.

“This is the first time that this has happened to me [and] you go through a lot of emotions,” Pierce said shortly after the news became public. “You go through it all: some anger, some disappointment, some embarrassment, you name it. We’re just trying to cope with it the best we can as a family.”

At 33 years old, this is the first time that Pierce has been let go from a coaching job. After a career in the BCHL with the Merritt Centennials and the Vernon Vipers, the Merritt, BC native played five seasons with the Royal Military College Paladins of the CIS.

As a student at RMC between 2004 and 2009, Pierce graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with a Psychology Major and Business Minor. He also earned a Master’s Degree of Business Administration with a concentration in Strategic Management.

In 2009-10, Pierce took over as the head coach of the Merritt Centennials, a job that he held for six seasons before being hired by the Ice in May 2015.

While at the helm of the rebuilding Ice, the franchise missed the WHL playoffs for the first two times since their arrival in Cranbrook in 1998.

Overall, Pierce accumulated a 26-99-19 record over two seasons with Kootenay.

Nevertheless, Pierce was surprised to find out that he would not be returning to his post for the 2017-18 season.

“I think that when these things come about you can use hindsight a little bit to maybe look for reasons, but I really didn’t see it coming,” he said. “It was a shocker for me, for sure.”

At the beginning of May, the Kootenay Ice underwent a transfer of ownership from the Chynoweth family to Winnipeg investors Matt Cockell and Greg Fettes.

According to a team press release, Cockell said that the decision to let Pierce go was based on a commitment to “a fresh start.”

“We feel that this was a necessary decision to accomplish that objective,” Cockell said, adding that “the Ice would like to thank Luke for his dedication to the hockey club and the community over the past two seasons.”

Although Pierce admitted that the effects of the news were still “too fresh”, he is thankful that the announcement came early enough in the summer for him to have some time to evaluate his next step.

“There’s always silver linings and I try to be the optimist as best I can,” he said. “I think that everyone understands that when there is new ownership or new managers that there’s an opportunity that things could happen.

“I was hopeful that I’d have a chance [to stay] with a group that I feel pretty strongly about coming into the season, but that’s not the case.”

Earlier in the off-season, Pierce was named by Hockey Canada to the coaching staff of Team Canada Red at the 2017 U17 Hockey Challenge. The coach said he has no immediate plans other than to “spend time with his family and figure out what the best move is from here forward.”

The Ice also announced that they will begin the search for a new head coach immediately and Cockell confirmed that the rest of the team’s current coaching staff is still under contract for the upcoming season.

Kootenay is now one of four WHL team’s with head coach vacancies, along with the Calgary Hitmen, Victoria Royals and Spokane Chiefs.
