Ex-NHL’er Smithson Joins Vipers – Recently retired NHL’er Jerred Smithson has joined the BCHL Vernon Vipers coaching staff for the 2017-18 season. Smithson who grew up in Vernon opted to play his junior hockey with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League. The undrafted centre would sign his first NHL contract with the LA Kings.

Smithson played over 600 games in the NHL with Nashville, Florida, Edmonton and Toronto before finishing his career in Europe with the Herning Blue Fox in Denmark in 2016. Over the years, Smithson became a familiar face with the Snakes opting to skate with the team in order to prepare for his own NHL and AHL camps.

The 38-year-old said he’s excited to start a new chapter of his hockey career and looks forward to helping this year’s squad as they set their sights on trying to win their 7th National Championship.

This is great news!

I played minor hockey with Jarred growing up. Nice guy and a Vernon boy to boot. Should add a lot of relevant experience to the kids on and off the ice.

Anytime you can add a former NHLer/local kid to your team in anyway is very good. Smithson's experience playing in the NHL will bring a lot to the Vipers on and off the ice. Being a local boy he also knows the history and winning tradition of the Vipers franchise.

Welcome aboard Jerred and best of luck this season!
